Address potential issues with your computer and mouse first.

In most cases, erratic pointer behavior on a computer screen has nothing to do with the monitor; rather, it's an indicator of a software or hardware problem with your computer or mouse. Standard troubleshooting should help you identify the source of the issue and resolve it. If the problem persists and only occurs when your computer is connected to the ViewSonic monitor, then troubleshoot your monitor's connection.

  1. Driver Problems

    • Drivers are software applications that help pieces of hardware like mice and keyboards communicate with your computer. If your mouse's driver or other internal drivers called firmware are out of date, the screen can exhibit some strange display problems like an erratic pointer. To resolve this type of problem, check for driver and firmware updates for your machine using the Windows Updates website. If you can't find anything there, also look for drivers available from the websites of the manufacturers of your mouse and computer.

    Software Problems

    • Sometimes mouse performance issues are related to software application errors. Usually downloading and installing all available updates from Windows solves these types of issues. Also check for updates for your anti-virus software and run a scan to ensure the problem isn't being caused by a virus. If you still have an issue, note whether it only occurs when you are running certain programs. If it does, check for and install updates for those programs. Notify the program manufacturers if the problem persists even after updates.

    Hardware Problems

    • Mice can exhibit several problems that are easily fixable. First, make sure the mouse and the surface you are using it on are clean, particularly if it is a roller ball mouse. If it is a wireless mouse, replace its batteries and make sure you have no interference caused by items located within 12 inches from the mouse such as wireless routers, radios, cell phones, desktop fans, fluorescent lights and large metal objects. If these measures don't work, try connecting to a different port on your computer or a different computer altogether. If none of this helps, you may need to replace the mouse.

    Monitor Connection Problems

    • If you've troubleshooted other potential issues and still suspect the problem is with the monitor, it probably isn't connected properly, particularly if you are seeing "shadows" or "ghosts." According to ViewSonic's Knowledgebase, if you use a low-quality cable or an extension cable, the display won't function correctly due to a "mismatch of the input impedance between the video card, the video cable, and the monitor." Only use a video cable recommended for use with the monitor and make sure that the pins in the video cable are in good condition.
