Google Maps Crashes FrontPage
Many websites for venues, events or businesses offer visitors a way to view directions to a specific location. Google Maps, a free online mapping tool, allows you to create customized maps or driving instructions and embed the maps within your website. Attempting to embed the necessary Google Maps coding may cause older HTML editors such as Microsoft FrontPage to freeze or crash.

History
-
Microsoft packaged its FrontPage website editing program with the Office Suite software starting in 1997, and released the last official version as Microsoft FrontPage 2003. The company has since replaced it with newer HTML editors and applications such as Microsoft Expression Web and SharePoint. Because FrontPage is no longer Microsoft's primary HTML developing software, it has limited abilities to support newer technology and HTML scripts.
Embedding Google Maps
-
The Google Maps website allows you to click the link icon of a map to receive the HTML embedding code for the map image. Usually, you would copy the code and paste it into a website editor to design a page where visitors can view and interact with a miniature version of the map. When you place the code into the “Code” view of Microsoft FrontPage, the “Design” view of the program will attempt to display the interactive map in preview mode. However, this may cause the program to become unresponsive until you manually close it via the Windows Task Manager, or it may crash and shut down on its own.

Basic Troubleshooting
-
Having the most current version of FrontPage and all official Microsoft Office updates installed on your computer can fix issues and bugs in Microsoft products and software. If FrontPage crashes only when you try to access the “Design” view, one solution is to create the other elements of your page first, and then switch to the “Code” view to paste in the Google Maps code. By saving the changes without switching back to the “Design” view, that particular page might not crash.
Image Workaround
-
A workaround for the FrontPage-Google Maps incompatibility involves creating a static image of the map instead of placing the Google Maps code on your site. To do this, you must navigate to the Google Maps map you want to use and press the “PrtScrn” key to take a screenshot of the map. By pasting the image into a graphic design program, such as Microsoft Paint, you can edit it until you have a picture of the map to place on your site. After inserting the image into your website using FrontPage, you can make it a clickable link to the actual URL address of the map, providing visitors with an interactive version of the map if needed.
