An IrfanView EPS Error

The freeware image viewer IrfanView can open and display a broad range of common picture formats, including the Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) format. But you'll need the additional Ghostscript plug-in to open files stored in the EPS format. Even with the plug-in installed, EPS images cannot be edited or saved.

  1. Installing Ghostscript

    • Any attempt to open an EPS file without Ghostscript installed results in an error. To install the plug-in, browse to the IrfanView plug-ins page at and click on the link labelled "Brothersoft.com - download IrfanView plugins" to locate the correct files. The appropriate download should start automatically. Once the transfer is complete, run the installation file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. Note that IrfanView must be installed first.

    Checking the EPS File

    • A badly encoded or damaged EPS file will also result in an error, even with the correct plug-ins installed. If possible, check the status of the file in an alternative image viewer, such as Adobe Illustrator or the free online viewer provided by 3M. If you have problems viewing it in an alternative application, this points to an issue with the file. If not, and you have access to the program that created the file, open it and save it again under a new file name before attempting to open the file in IrfanView again.

    Reinstall IrfanView

    • It's possible that an internal problem within IrfanView or one of its plug-ins is preventing EPS files from opening correctly. Uninstall the software using the component within Control Panel, then download and install the latest version of the software and the plug-ins bundle from IrfanView. This ensures the latest bug fixes and compatibility patches have been applied. In addition, it replaces any program files which may have become damaged or erased. After the installation process has finished, attempt to open the EPS file again.

    Finding Further Help

    • If you are still experiencing errors when attempting to load EPS files, the best place to turn for help is the forum page attached to the official IrfanView website. If you cannot find any information relevant to your problem in the existing forum posts, start a new thread on the Support board, including as much detail as you can about the error (such as your operating system and where the EPS file originates from).
