My GeForce FX-5200 DVI Port Does Not Work
The Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 features a digital video interface socket, separate video socket and video graphics array socket. The DVI socket, as the name indicates, allows the card to send digital signals to an external monitor; the VGA outputs analog signals. Although hardware failure can cause the DVI port to stop working, most device malfunctions are related to software issues.

Generic Driver
-
When Windows is unable to locate a proprietary device driver for a hardware component, it uses a generic driver instead. The operating system uses drivers to send data back and forth between a program and a hardware device. When an application needs the graphics card to perform a particular function, it sends this request to the driver. The driver then transmits this data to the card and informs it to perform the requested procedure. Proprietary drivers are coded specifically to work with the hardware on the card, while generic drivers are used to provide the most basic support possible. If Windows is using a generic driver to send data to, and receive data from, the GeForce FX 5200, the DVI port might not work. Install the driver from the software CD that comes with the card to replace the generic driver.
Defective Driver
-
Like all computer programs, drivers can contain bugs in the code that affect the performance of connected hardware. Certain bugs can interfere with the digital capabilities of the graphics card, preventing the card from outputting digital video on an external display. Downloading and installing the most recent driver found on the Nvidia website should resolve bugs affecting the function of the FX 5200. If the latest software release for the card is already installed to the computer, however, downgrading to a previous release might help.

Defective Cable
-
The graphics card is responsible for transmitting the data needed to output video on a monitor, but this information must be passed through a digital cable. If the cable connecting the graphics card to the monitor is cut or frayed, or if pins are missing from the interface that connects to the graphics card, the video information won't reach the external monitor.
Loose Card
-
The GeForce FX 5200 connects to an accelerated graphics port x8 slot on the motherboard. If the card has come loose from the expansion slot or isn't installed securely, the computer might have difficulty making use of all the features of the device. If the copper edges on the card are sticking up from the AGP slot, the device isn't making proper contact with the motherboard.
