Deceased Veterans of Foreign Wars Scholarships for Descendants
Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is an organization dedicated to the support of veterans and their families. VFW offers scholarships to students in secondary and post-secondary school. Generally, these scholarships are open to children of living and deceased veterans. In addition to VFW, other organizations offer scholarships to children of deceased veterans.

Voice of Democracy Scholarship
-
The Voice of Democracy Scholarship is offered to students in grades 9 through 12. Students can be enrolled in private, public or home school. The $30,000 scholarship is awarded to the student chosen as winner of the VFW's essay, although an audio version of the essay is also required. The VFW gives students a different theme, or essay topic, each year. This scholarship is open to all eligible students, not just descendants of deceased veterans.
Patriot's Pen
-
Students in grades 6 through 8 -- in public, home or private school -- can enter the VFW's Patriot's Pen essay contest. Students are required to pen an essay on a theme provided by the VFW. The winner of the essay contest receives a $10,000 savings bond, which can be used for college. The Patriot's Pen essay contest requires an essay of 300 to 400 words, and does not require an audio version. The Patriot's Pen program is open to students whose parents are not deceased veterans.
