Microsoft Office Project Portfolio Server 2007, the full name of Microsoft Portfolio, has been renamed Microsoft Project Server 2010. Project Portfolio Server 2007 is a project and portfolio management application that facilitates and manages the creation of projects, including workflows, in a server environment.

  1. Portfolio Server 2007

    • The Microsoft Office Project Portfolio Server is not software, but a server, so its contents can be shared, edited and updated by any user connected to it. A server has more data capacity than an individual software program, so all of the accumulated data for the project is kept in one place, and multiple portfolios can be managed. The Portfolio Server also includes reporting capabilities for generating reports analyzing the data within projects and portfolios.

    Portfolio Components

    • Project Portfolio Server templates can be customized to specific projects. The contents of the project portfolios created with Project Portfolio Server 2007 and Project Server 2010 are displayed in a tab window setting. The first tab contains Project Info and includes the project name, schedule, objectives, stakeholders and a financial summary. Other tabs include additional information and a more detailed step-by-step procedure, a budget cost, budget resources and an estimate of the project's benefits.

    Portfolio Dashboard

    • The Portfolio Dashboard of Project Portfolio Server offers the ability to measure, track and analyze projects, programs and applications. Set up in a spreadsheet style, each project portfolio is categorized by department, such as finance, marketing and operations. A feature called My Scorecard can display business organizational data from the portfolios at a glance. Further sections of the Portfolio Dashboard include Status Reports and a Flexible Reporting Framework that customizes and publishes report templates for standardization.

    Portfolio Analysis

    • Project Portfolio Server has a number of data and statistical analysis tools that can be displayed in different formats, including matrices, spreadsheets, graphs and charts. A project's ROI, or return on investment, can be calculated, as well as the strategic value score, a risk score for risk assessment, an impact score based on a 5-point scale, a business importance score and the project's architectural fit within the business organization's architectural structure. Project Portfolio Server charts can be displayed on all three axes and in a three-dimensional view.
