Windows Restoration Programs for Dell Computers
Dell computers do not ship with a copy of the Windows install disc. Instead, users requiring a restoration of Windows must use one of several options provided by Dell. Some models include DataSafe, a method of Windows restoration that preserves user data. Others use the Backup and Recovery Manager, which allows for manual restoration to backups. Older Dell computers only include a complete factory image for full restoration. Users who uninstall or lose the included restoration programs can request a recovery disc from Dell to perform the safe procedure.

DataSafe Local Backup
-
Dell includes the Dell DataSafe Local Backup software on all Inspiron, Studio and XPS models built since April 22, 2009. DataSafe provides the ability to restore Windows to the factory settings without wiping the hard drive and losing personal data. In addition to Windows restoration, DataSafe can back up and restore individual files and folders. Enter DataSafe Windows restoration by repeatedly pressing "F8" during boot. Select "Repair Your Computer" and press "Enter." Click "Next," log in to the Administrator account and click "Dell Factory Image Recovery and DataSafe options."
Backup and Recovery
-
Dell computers in the OptiPlex, Latitude, Vostro and Precision lines built since May 26, 2009, include the Dell Backup and Recovery Manager. This program performs full backups and restores from within Windows, from the Windows Recovery Environment or from bootable backup discs. Users must create these discs manually, using either manual backups or the Dell Factory Image. Restoring to the Dell Factory Image will revert Windows to its initial state, erasing all other data.

Backup Discs
-
Dell owners can request a set of free backup discs from the company after purchase of a new computer. These discs contain the full operating system and all files needed to restore the computer to factory status. Restore Windows by inserting the restore disc and rebooting the computer. Users with Dell DataSafe installed can create their own set of backup discs ahead of time to avoid requiring Dell to mail the discs.
Factory Image Restore
-
Users with Dell computers built before the inclusion of DataSafe or the Backup and Recovery Manager must perform a Dell Factory Image Restore to restore Windows. This program reverts the computer to its initial settings and does not include any file restoration or backup software. Initiate the procedure by pressing "F8" during boot and selecting "Repair Your Computer." Select your language and log in as an administrator. Click "Dell Factory Image Restore" and follow the prompts to reformat the hard drive.
