Cleaning Function on a Canon BC-21E
Canon printers that utilize the BC-21E print cartridges all have a built-in cleaning function for your print cartridges. Cleaning your print heads will provide a crisp and clear image and should be done every few weeks to maintain your print quality. Cleaning your print heads will use a small amount of ink.

Purpose for Cleaning the Print Heads
-
Print heads are like any other piece of machinery that encounter dirt and dust on a daily basis. The print heads on bubble jet ink cartridges use a drop-on-demand technology developed by Canon that uses a small heater to control the ink released from the reservoir. Ink can dry on the heater and cause too much or too little ink to be released from the cartridge to the printer.
Cleaning the Print Heads
-
Your Canon printer will have a head cleaner function on the printer's controls. To access the print head cleaner, press the "Function" button and use the "Arrow" buttons on your printer to select the "Head Cleaning" option. Press the "Start/Copy" button to start the cleaning process. Repeat this up to five times to clean your cartridge.

Signs that a Cleaning is Needed
-
The most prominent sign of a dirty print head will be smears, smudges and poor print quality from your Canon printer. Because bubble-jet ink cartridges rely on heat to release the proper amount of ink, you may want to perform a print-head cleaning if an extended period has lapsed between print jobs to remove any dried ink lodged in the print heads.
Cleaning Paper
-
Canon offers high-resolution paper designed for high-quality printing projects. While this type of paper provides photo-quality printing, it can produce dust particles that can clog your print-heads and stick to your rollers. Each package of high-resolution paper comes with a cleaning sheet that must be used after each print-job with this type of paper. To use the cleaning paper, remove the two pieces of tape from the sheet and insert the paper into the printer with the sticky side facing you. Press the "Function" button on your printer, and select the "Roller cleaning" option and press the "Start/Copy" button to clean the paper dust out of your printer.
