Problems with Syncing the iPad & iTunes with Aperture

The iPad can be used to save and share your photos.

Aperture for Mac OS X Lion can be used to sync your photos on iTunes and your iPad. The iPod Photo Cache stores photos for display on your iPad. After you first create a common folder library with Aperture, subsequent additions of the library may result in sync failure. This error is often encountered by those using iTunes with Aperture. The Aperture version 3 upgrade, in particular, has been giving some iPad users problems when they attempt to sync the Aperture Library onto the iPad.

  1. Error Message

    • When attempting to sync the iPad and iTunes with Aperture, you may receive the error message "Your Apterture Library could not be found. Open the Preferences window in Aperture and enable the preference to share previews with other applications." Unfortunately, when you go to change the Share Preview with iLife and iWork option and click Always, it often doesn't work. You can solve this problem by creating a new library, or by upgrading the Aperture app.

    Switch Library

    • Create a new Aperture library by going to File and selecting Switch to Library, and then selecting Other/New. Click the "Create New" button in the dialogue box and type in the desired name of the new file. Once the library is done switching over to the new Aperture library, return to File, select Switch to Library and select Aperture Library. Exit Aperture. Delete the empty new library you just made. Open iTunes. Select Sync Photos from: Aperture. The iPad should sync with Aperture and the photo library will be saved onto it.

    Aperture Upgrade

    • Apple recommends that you rebuild the Aperture Library before you upgrade to the newest version. Do this by holding the "Option" and "Command" keys when the Aperture Library opens, and clicking the "Rebuild Now" button to upgrade to the latest version of Aperture. Make sure you have enough extra space on your hard drive during the rebuild, as Aperture uses temporary files to rebuild itself. If you get a warning dialogue box about memory space, free up your memory or move the library to a different hard drive on your Mac. Rebuilding the library may take several hours, or longer, depending on how many files you have stored in it.

    Other Sync Problems

    • If you attempt to save pictures from your device back onto your computer after importing them onto your iPad, this will not work and may even cause a sync failure. To sync these pictures and place them back on your computer, you must put them in Saved Photos or Camera Roll. Another way to retrieve photos that you synced onto your iPad is to email them from your iPad to your email address, then save the photos from the email onto your hard drive.
