Skype
-
Skype is a stand-alone voice and video communication application for Windows, Mac and Linux systems. The application is not completely free like Ekiga and you must buy credits to make voice calls. Video calls are free, however, when you're calling other Skype members. Ekiga is free and doesn’t require the purchase of credits. But Ekiga is not compatible with Mac systems.
Ekiga and Video Calls
-
The two applications cannot communicate with each other due to Skype’s use of non-standard protocols not recognized by Ekiga. You cannot add Skype members to Ekiga’s interface, nor can you add Ekiga members to Skype’s interface. You also cannot communicate with a Skype member by means of a video call using Ekiga, and vice versa.

However, you can call a Skype member using Ekiga if the member has a Skype To Go number. Skype To Go is a service where Skype members receive a 10-digit phone number that you can enter into Ekiga’s on-screen keypad and call the Skype member. The service is not free and Skype members must purchase Skype credits, a Pay As You Go package or have a Skype subscription to cover the service’s charge.
Instant Messaging Component
-
Ekiga’s instant messaging component is also not compatible with Skype’s instant messaging component. You cannot add Skype members to the component, but Ekiga’s Skype’s instant messaging component is compatible with Windows Messenger, also known as Windows Live Messenger.
