Issues With a Dell Dimension 3000 and DDR400
The Dell Dimension 3000 accepts DDR RAM that operates at 400-MHz speeds, but not all versions of DDR400 will function properly in the Dimension 3000. Different memory stick elements — such as storage space, brand and error-checking capabilities — will impact whether your DDR400 RAM works properly in your Dell 3000. While you will not know a RAM stick’s functionality until you actually install it, several considerations go into purchasing DDR400 that is compatible with your system.
-
Maximum RAM
-
The Dell Dimension 3000 can support up to 2 GB of 400-MHz RAM. The computer features two memory slots, each capable of hosting up to 1 GB of RAM; the two memory banks, when combined, will total the 2 GB your computer is capable of using. If you attempt to install any more than 2 GB of DDR400 in your computer, the Dimension 3000 will not boot properly.
ECC vs. Non-ECC
-
Some RAM features an error-checking and correcting (ECC) capability, while other RAM (non-ECC) does not.. Additionally, not all computers can support ECC RAM; the Dell Dimension 3000 is one that does not support the ECC capability. If you attempt to install ECC DDR400 in your Dimension 3000, it will cause operating issues. Purchase non-ECC RAM to avoid any compatibility problems with your computer.
-
Parallel RAM
-
Your Dell Dimension 3000 can support DDR333, also known as PC2700 RAM, as well as DDR400, also referred to as PC3200. Your computer will operate at its best performance capacity when both sticks of RAM match each other. For instance, if you currently have one stick of DDR333 in your computer and you install one stick of DDR400 alongside it, your computer will not work as well as if you were using two sticks of DDR400.
Brand
-
Brand usually makes no difference in terms of compatibility with computers, but computers such as the Dimension 3000 can react negatively to a particular brand of RAM. Choose well-reviewed and reputable brands of RAM such as PNY or Kensington to avoid potential functioning conflicts between your Dimension 3000 and your DDR400. You can also visit a site such as Crucial — an online database devoted to computer RAM — to find compatible RAM for your system.
