Salary & Wages for a Roller Skating Assistant Manager
Recreation and leisure-time services include skating rinks, which are typically open to the general public. Earnings for individuals employed in this segment of the amusement and entertainment industry are often low except for positions that require a college education. Many employees are lesser skilled, younger workers seeking entry-level positions. Salary usually is based on the size of the roller rink and an assistant manager’s level of responsibility.

Role of an Assistant Manager
-
Depending on the size of a roller skating rink, the responsibilities of an assistant manager can differ. Assistant managers working in the recreation and leisure activities field help manage day-to-day operations. In most cases, an assistant manager reports to a general manager. Normally, the duties of an assistant manager for a roller skating rink include maintaining customer relations, training and supervising staff, and ensuring that policies for skater safety are enforced. Many assistant managers are employed by the rink’s owner to oversee business operations when the owner is not present. The assistant manager for a larger rink often has the additional roles of keeping paperwork up to date, tracking finances and directing marketing initiatives.
Nature of the Work
-
A large number of the businesses that fall within the leisure activities category of the recreation and entertainment industry are small. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 43 percent of all positions available in the arts, entertainment and recreation industry in 2008 were in businesses that employed fewer than 100 workers. Approximately 45 percent of all employees were younger than age 35 with workers under the age of 24 accounting for the greatest percentage. Younger workers who have less experience generally earn lower wages. Only about 5 percent of the jobs available in the recreation and leisure-time services industry involve financial, business and management occupations.

Earnings
-
Wages for roller skating rink assistant manager are not based only on rink size and an individual’s level of experience and training, but also on a rink's geographic location. Manager positions in roller skating rinks in major cities earn average annual salaries ranging between $60,000 and $90,000, according to survey data compiled by the Economic Research Institute. Los Angeles and New York City are two cities where skating rink managers earn the highest salaries. Unions that provide contracts guaranteeing employees minimum salary requirements are uncommon in recreation and leisure-time activities businesses.
Rink Size
-
Positions with smaller businesses tend to pay less than larger facilities where the owner is not onsite and the management staff is given more overall responsibility. Management staff employed by larger rinks has the potential for earning more. Assistant managers at larger facilities are often responsible for assisting in developing and coordinating special programs, recruiting staff and preparing budgets. Job requirements may include accounting and clerical experience, management skills and computer proficiency. Individuals who have more knowledge, training and years of work experience in the industry are responsible for a broader scope of activities, and therefore, generally are paid more.
