Hibernation Problems With Compaq NC8230

When you set your HP Compaq NC8230 notebook in hibernation mode, the computer saves your desktop and files to the hard disk, so you can resume using them when you relaunch the operating system. However, conflicts with other devices can cause hibernation problems. Windows XP came preinstalled with NC8230 notebooks. If your computer is unable to enter hibernate mode, HP provides a few troubleshooting options.

  1. Causes

    • The HP Compaq NC8230 notebook usually runs into problems going into hibernate mode if the unit is using an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 bg or 2915 abg WLAN card with Intel PROSet 9.x installed. Depending on the settings, the computer won't go into hibernate mode while running on battery power. Additional hibernation problems are caused by incompatible software and outdated or incompatible drivers that interfere with the power management feature.

    Solution

    • If the HP Compaq NC8230 notebook is unable to go into standby mode, you must disable PROset pop-up messages. Locate the PROset icon on the system tray on the taskbar. If you double-click it, PROset launches automatically. From the "Tools" menu, select "Application Settings" to configure the device's settings. If check marks appear next to any of the following options, the device won't go into standby mode: "Show Alert Notifications," "Show Information Notifications," and "Show a list of available networks when not connected." Clear the check marks and save the changes. Once saved, the NC8230 notebook should go into hibernation mode. If you're using incompatible programs and drivers, run the Crash Analysis tool on Microsoft's website to determine whether the drivers are the cause of problems. If the drivers or programs are problematic, update them or uninstall incompatible versions.

    Tips

    • Some NC8230 notebooks don't support hibernation mode depending on whether you're using a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows XP operating system. If you type "powercfg.cpl" in the Run box on the Start menu and press Enter, the Power Options Properties dialog box launches. If the Hibernate tab is available on the dialog box, it means your computer supports hibernation mode. By default, the Hibernate button isn't displayed when you click the "Turn off Computer" option located on the Start menu. If you hold the Shift key, the Stand By button automatically changes to Hibernate. Before downloading programs and drivers, verify they are compatible with the operating system. Some programs and drivers are only compatible with 32-bit operating systems installed on the HP Compaq NC8230, while others are only compatible with 64-bit systems.

    Warnings

    • Making several changes to your computer while it's in hibernation mode can cause system problems. Disconnecting third-party devices such as flash drives or external hard drives while the system is in hibernation mode may interfere with the power saving mode. In addition, you should not force your computer to go into hibernation mode when you're actively running programs and applications or they will not run correctly. This is especially true for CD and DVD burning applications and system backup tools.
