iWeb Site Not Found

When you try to visit your iWeb site and get the dreaded "Not Found" error message, it's frustrating, yet possible to fix if you can pinpoint the underlying cause. Check the most common reasons first and then focus on lesser-known issues that may prevent the server from displaying the site. In some instances, the error message is the cause of a temporary server outage over which you have no control.

  1. Index Page Missing

    • One of the most common reasons a user would receive the HTTP 404 status error or "Not Found" message is a missing index page for your iWeb site. The server has nothing to send back to the browser to show the user, which results in an error message instead. Check to see if the "index.html" file is saved in the root or public HTML directory on your website's hosting server.

    Server Not Responding

    • Another possible cause to seeing the "Not Found" error message is that the server doesn't send back a response when the iWeb site or page is requested. This happens when the browser tries to access the server from a wrong port or Internet Protocol address. If you're not hosting with Apple and hosting with another provider, check the IP address for your domain name server records to see if the information is set correctly.

    File Extension

    • It's possible that the file extension the user typed in with the address doesn't match the actual extension, resulting in an error. For example, if the user types "username.me.com/index.php" into the browser, the iWeb server doesn't support the PHP file type nor is it the correct address. The correct address, given the above example, is "username.me.com/index.html" since iWeb only supports the HTML file type.

    Content Too Large

    • If your iWeb site has a lot of content or large photos to display on a page, it could cause the server to time out. This happens when the server tries to retrieve all the content and send it back to the browser. However, either the server or browser is unable to handle such a large file size in its memory, resulting in a "Not Found" error page.
