iDump Is Missing an iPod
iDump is an abandonware tool capable of transferring audio and video files between a computer and certain iPod models. It offers users a way to make fair-use backup copies of the individual files in their iPod libraries without having to use iTunes. If you receive a "missing iPod" error message upon running iDump, troubleshoot it and/or upgrade to a more recent iPod management tool.
-
Basic Troubleshooting
-
iDump's "missing iPod" error message could be due to a simple problem of permissions. For example, iDump will not work if iTunes has launched automatically and is in the midst of syncing your iPod. Exit both iTunes and iDump. Restart iDump and see if it finds your iPod. If you still get the same error message, exit iDump again. Unplug your iPod's USB connection cable from your computer. Restart your iPod; then plug it into your computer's USB port again. Launch iDump and see if it works. If these steps don't fix the problem, your iPod may not be compatible with iDump.
iPod Touch Incompatiblity
-
iDump was designed to work with the LCD-screen version of the iPod and its accompanying firmware. Released in the Fall of 2007, the iPod Touch replaced the iPod's LCD with a multi-touch screen, which represented a major overhaul in terms of hardware and software. In addition, the iPod Touch completely abandoned the classic iPod firmware in favor of Apple's newly developed iOS mobile operating system. Because of the significant differences between the iPod Touch and all previous versions of the iPod, iDump may not function properly when confronted with an iOS device.

iDump Project Forks
-
As of the date of publication, the original iDump project is inactive. iDump's creator -- EscSoft -- ceased development after iDump Build 29, which it released on June 6, 2009. With its next update -- which addressed the arrival of iOS -- the iDump development team split the project into three separate products: iDump Video2iPod for converting video files and transferring between your computer and your iPod, iDump Pod2iTunes for copying audio files and playlists from your iPod to your iTunes library and iDump Pod2backup for backing up and restoring entire iPod music and video libraries. iDump users running into the "missing iPod" error should consider downloading and installing one of these more recent tools, which reportedly work with iOS.
Replacement Titles
-
Since Apple's unveiling of iOS, a number of other iPod and iPhone-management tools have come out. Gtkpod iPod Manager and Hipo are both free open-source tools for managing iOS devices. Both titles have similar features to iDump and allows users to transfer audio and multimedia files between their iPods and their computers. If you own an iPod model that includes a camera, GPixPod is a free and open-source tool for transferring images between your camera-equipped iPod and your computer.
