The LAN Is Missing on a Toshiba PSAG4U

PSAG4U is the manufacturing name given to computers part of the TOSHIBA Satellite A305 series of notebooks. The term "local area network" refers to a computer network limited to a small geographical sphere, such as a home, a school or small business. The term is also used to refer to the hardware that allows the PC to connect to such a network. If the LAN is missing, the PSAG4U won't connect to wired Internet.

  1. BIOS Configuration

    • The basic input/output system on the TOSHIBA PSAG4U determines how devices behave. The BIOS is kept inside of a chip rooted to the motherboard; when the Satellite boots, the BIOS performs several operations designed to configure and initialize the hardware, as well as prepare the computer for boot. If the LAN adapter is disabled in the BIOS, the operating system will behave as if no network card is installed on the PC. TOSHIBA HWSetup, contained in the TOSHIBA folder on the Start menu, provides access to the BIOS settings. Changing Built-in LAN to "Disabled" turns off the card in the BIOS.

    Driver Problem

    • Computers use software called device drivers to execute functions on an installed component. The operating system sends data to the associated driver, which then issues commands to the connected device. The hardware performs the specified action based upon the driver's directive. Each device, including the LAN card, needs a driver to talk to applications installed to the OS. If the driver is missing or corrupted, the PSAG4U won't execute the routine needed to connect to the Internet. Device Manager, found in Control Panel, shows the status of the network card under the Network Adapters submenu.

    Disabled Adapter

    • Network Connections, accessed through Control Panel, controls the configuration and properties of the LAN and wireless LAN adapters. If the LAN adapter is turned off, the computer will fail to make use of the network card, preventing the PSAG4U from seeing local wired networks. If the LAN card is disabled, Local Area Connection will be grayed out on the Network Connections screen.

    Defective LAN

    • Computer hardware has a limited shelf life, so it's not uncommon for one or more devices to fail after a couple of years. If troubleshooting fails to restore the LAN and re-enable the PC to detect the adapter, the card might be dead. Some TOSHIBA Satellite A305 models can accommodate a replacement card using an ExpressCard or CardBus slot, depending on the specifications of the model.
