Your MacBook Pro may need to be configured a different way to load Yahoo! Messenger.

With the use of programs such as Yahoo! Messenger, you can chat with friends, family or colleagues using the same program. If you're interested in entering a Yahoo! chat but can't get it to load the way you think it should on your Mac computer, you may need to adjust any number of settings to get the program to connect. Since Yahoo! chat rooms are accessed through Yahoo! Messenger, you'll need to do some troubleshooting with Messenger to get to the root of the problem.

  1. Latest Version

    • When you're troubleshooting a computer problem, the first step to take is usually to make sure you have the latest version of the software installed on your computer. Yahoo! Messenger has several versions, so you want to make sure you have the latest one. Navigate to the Yahoo! Messenger for Mac page and click "Download Now" to get the latest version. You'll need Mac OS X 10.4 or later for the program to work properly. According to Yahoo!, most people's problems with Messenger go away when they have the latest version installed. In some cases, uninstalling and then reinstalling the program may also help.

    Connection Preferences

    • Next you'll want to make sure your connection preferences are set up correctly. Open Messenger and then select Messenger from the main menu. Then click Preferences, then Connection, and finally click the Firewall with no Proxies selection. Click "OK," and then click "OK" again to sign into again Messenger with your user name and password. These connection settings may disable the Voice option in Messenger, but should configure the rest of Messenger properly.

    Another Way

    • If having Voice disabled is not acceptable or you are still not connecting to Messenger, try another set of connection preferences. Select Messenger from the main menu, and then select Preferences followed by Connection. From the Connection page, click No Network Detection, and then click "OK." Click "OK" again, and then sign in with your user name and password.

    Firewall

    • In some cases you may need to configure your firewall settings to allow Yahoo! Messenger to connect. To do this, click the Apple icon at the top left of your screen and select System Preferences. Then select Security, then Firewall, and click Set Access for Specific Services and Applications. Click the plus sign near the bottom of the box and then scroll until you see Yahoo! Messenger. Click Yahoo! Messenger and then click "Add." Close the System Preferences window; Yahoo! Messenger should now be on the exceptions list for your firewall.
