Gateway With Problems Booting Up
When your Gateway computer displays issues as it is trying to boot up, this can be a sign of a number of issues with your machine. If you have recently installed new software or hardware drivers, your Gateway may have an incompatibility that causes problems during startup. Your computer may also be struggling with a virus infection or another form of malware that bombards your computer as soon as Windows boots. Slow or troublesome computer startups can also be caused by errors on the machine’s hard drive.

Launch in Safe Mode
-
To begin troubleshooting your Gateway computer, reboot the machine to Safe Mode. This allows your computer to start with only the very basic operating functions running and will not launch programs or viruses that may be causing your Gateway to have boot issues. To do this, reboot your computer and press the “F8” key repeatedly until a menu appears with the option to start up in Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode, update and run your virus and malware scanners to ensure your computer does not have an infection. If you have reason to believe a specific program is causing the issue, you can also uninstall the program while in Safe Mode.
Selective Startup
-
If your Gateway has issues due to incompatible programs that launch at startup, you can use the Windows Selective Startup tool. This prevents specific programs from starting when your Gateway boots up, which allows you to troubleshoot until you find which program is causing the issue. Type “msconfig” in the text box on the Start menu to launch the System Configuration window. Click the box next to “Selective Startup” and remove the marks next to “Load System Services” and “Load Startup Items.” Click “OK” and reboot your computer to launch your Gateway using the selective startup.

System Restore
-
If you can’t find the program that is causing the issue and you can determine that there is not a virus on your Gateway, you can use Windows System Restore to roll your computer back to a previous working configuration. Launch the Start menu and type “System Restore” in the search box to locate the program. The Windows System Restore wizard will walk you through the process, allowing you to select a previous working configuration.
Scan Hard Drive for Errors
-
If troubleshooting programs and drivers does not fix the issue, this may be an indication of bad sectors or errors on the Gateway’s hard drive. You can run a scan on your hard drive that finds and fixes data errors. To do this, open the Computer window from your desktop, right-click your main hard drive and select “Properties.” Go to the “Tools” tab and click the “Check Now” button under the Error-checking section.
