My Asus Freezes When it Goes to Standby

Software or hardware conflicts can cause an Asus PC to freeze or crash when entering or attempting to wake from standby. Windows 7 uses power management settings that can interfere with the operation of certain hardware devices; when the computer attempts to enter standby, the connected devices malfunction, causing the PC to freeze. Changes to the system or its files can also prevent the PC from sleeping.

  1. Hard Drive

    • After entering sleep, Windows 7 turns off the hard drive in order to reduce energy consumption. Modern hard drives can switch between sleep -- a low-energy mode in which the platters inside the drive stop spinning -- and active mode, but most older hard disks don't support these different power modes. The power settings associated with the active power plan, accessible from Control Panel, provide the option to turn off the hard disk after entering Standby. Changing this setting to "Never" prevents the hard disk from interfering with sleep on your Asus PC.

    Slave-Only Mode

    • On certain Asus motherboards, if the computer is in slave-only mode, the computer will freeze and display the error message "0x0000007a" or "0x000000F4" when resuming from Standby. Multiple parallel advanced technology attachment devices can connect to one Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment (PATA) channel; one drive is set as the master device, and the other as a slave, or subordinate, device. These errors appear when the operating system is installed to a hard drive that is connected to the channel as a slave, but no master device is attached to that same channel. Re-configuring the PATA device as a master drive should resolve the issue.

    Corrupted File

    • Viruses can end up corrupting or deleting the files or settings that the computer uses to put an Asus computer to sleep. System File Checker, run from the Command Prompt, checks for damaged or missing files that Windows uses to perform basic processes; if it detects a problem with a system file, it repairs or replaces it when possible. There are times when SFC needs to access the files on the Windows 7 DVD to complete its operation. The command "sfc /scannow" performs an SFC scan on the PC.

    Service Pack

    • Service packs contain a bundle of hot fixes, or updates, that fix issues, patch security holes and improve features and functions in Windows. Failing to upgrade to the latest Windows 7 service pack prevents the operating from running at peak performance; installing regular updates to the Asus PC helps to ensure that Windows remains stable. On the other hand, certain updates can interfere with the operation of Windows 7 if the update contains bugs; if the Asus begins freezing shortly after installing a new hot fix or service pack, use System Restore to revert the system configuration to an earlier state.
