Presario C500 S-Video Problems

With the S-Video port built into the Compaq Presario C500's video card you can transmit video signals to a TV or monitor to watch live TV programs or recorded programs. However, video display problems often arise as a result of improper connections and issues with S-Video cables. Although these problems are common, they can usually be solved quickly and safely.

  1. Connection

    • If you're using an S-Video cable to connect your Compaq Presario C500 notebook to a TV or an external monitor, verify the connection is snug. The port on the cable should be tightly connected to the S-Video connector on the left side of the notebook and then other end must be tightly connected to the S-Video connector on the TV. In most cases, the TV won't detect the video signals if the connection is loose.

    Cable

    • In some cases, the S-Video cable is the cause of connection problems. If the cable is damaged or shows signs of wear and tear such as exposed wires, the Presario C500 notebook won't be able to send video signals to a TV or monitor. If video appears on the TV or monitor for a few seconds before disappearing, the cable is most likely faulty.

    Input

    • Even with a proper S-Video connection, the correct input channel must be selected to transmit video signals. The input channel is selected from the TV (or the TV's remote) or monitor. Each type of connection is assigned a different TV channel depending on the connection. Press the Input button on the TV or remote control repeatedly to select the S-Video input channel the Compaq Presario C500 is connected to. When you select the correct channel, video appears on the screen.

    Tips

    • If you're using a satellite or cable receiver to connect your computer to the TV, refer to its manual or documentation for setup instructions involving S-Video cables. Connection methods will vary with different devices.
