What Can I Do if My Scanner Seems Stuck?

A computer scanner can become stuck during a scanning operation for reasons that include software problems and issues with the document feeder. However, if the scanner is functioning properly, these issues are not difficult to resolve. After you have performed the basic troubleshooting steps of restarting the scanner and checking for updated device drivers, investigate further to find the cause of the problem.

  1. Rollers

    • If your scanner uses rubber rollers to feed documents, the rollers can become dirty due to ink, dust and correction fluid. Cleaning the rollers can prevent the scanner from becoming stuck during a scanning operation.

    Document Feeder

    • Many scanners have automatic document feeders that allow you to scan multiple pages in a single operation. Document feeders typically do not support photo paper, card stock or newsprint. In addition, document feeders require undamaged paper, free of holes, creases or staples. Paper that doesn't meet the specifications for an automatic document feeder can become jammed, halting the scanning operation and potentially damaging the original document. Using the document feeder while a document is on the scanner glass can also cause a jam. Consult the scanner's instruction manual for information about clearing a paper jam. You can prevent this from happening by using the glass scanner bed for damaged documents.

    Interface

    • Scanners can scan documents with high precision, creating images consisting of millions of pixels. A scanner can transfer these images to the computer quickly over a high-speed USB 2.0 or FireWire interface. However, if the scanner is connected to an older USB 1.1 or parallel port, scanning at high resolutions may be slow, making it appear as though your scanner is stuck.

    Scanning Queue

    • In a multiuser environment with a shared scanner, a user can start a scanning operation and log out of the network or shut her computer down before the operation is complete. This can cause the operation to become stuck in the queue, preventing other users from scanning documents. Resolve this problem by restarting the scanner. You may also need to restart the computer to which the scanner is connected.

    Scanner Lock

    • Some scanners ship with locks that prevent their internal photo sensors from moving during shipping. If the lock is still attached, the scanner is unable to complete a scan operation. You may also hear unpleasant noises when you attempt to scan a document. Remove the lock to resolve this issue.
