Scroll Does Not Work With Firefox

Firefox can sometimes experience an error where scrolling does not work in the browser even if it works in every other program. This commonly affects trackpads and touchpads, but can also affect mouse wheels. The problem is usually a sign that your mouse drivers need to be updated, but can sometimes be fixed by making sure Firefox is up to date first.

  1. Update/Reinstall Firefox

    • If the problem is caused by Firefox itself, make sure you are using the latest version of the browser. Click "Help," then click "About Firefox." If there are any updates available, you are given the option to update Firefox in the window. If this doesn't work, do a quick reinstall, but first make sure to back up your bookmarks and make a note of your add-ons, just in case.

    Change Firefox Settings

    • Firefox has a number of different scroll settings in its Advanced Settings section. Click "Tools," then "Options" and the "Advanced" icon on the right. Under the "General" tab there is a category called "Browsing" which has two scroll option check boxes: autoscrolling and smooth scrolling. Change those options from your current defaults, then save the new setting to see if this re-enables scrolling.

    Firefox About:Config

    • Firefox's about:config utility has additional options that may fix scrolling issues. Type "about:config" without quotes into your address bar, then proceed past the warning window. Type or paste "mousewheel.withnokey" without quotes into the filter field, at which point three different lines appear. Make sure the value of "mousewheel.withnokey.action" is set to "0," and that "mousewheel.withnokey.numlines" has a value of "1." To change the settings, double-click the line you want to change.

    Update Mouse Drivers

    • If none of the above work, your mouse drivers probably need updating. Visit the website of your mouse's manufacturer to download the latest drivers. If you don't know what mouse you have, right-click on "My Computer," select "Properties," click the "Hardware" tab, then click the "Device Manager" button. After downloading and installing the driver updates, restart your computer to see if scrolling now works in Firefox.
