Windows Live Messenger Is Not Recognizing My CyberLink YouCam

Windows Live Messenger is an instant messaging application that offers voice and video chat. When your CyberLink YouCam is not recognized by the application, you may need to update the webcam's USB drivers or re-install the Messenger software. Depending on the cause, you may find a simple solution using basic troubleshooting that will soon have you video chatting.

  1. Default Device

    • Ensure that your CyberLink YouCam is selected as the default camera in Windows Live Messenger if it is not recognized by the application. You can run the Audio and Video Setup wizard to determine if the cam is the default. The wizard is accessible through the “Tools” menu in the application. You will be guided through selecting the cam as the default and configuring its settings. After completing the wizard, start a video chat to determine if the problem is resolved.

    Update YouCam Drivers

    • Check the CyberLink website for updates to your YouCam if Messenger still doesn't recognize it. The drivers for the cam may be outdated, which can cause the application to not recognize it. Download and install any available updates for your webcam from the “Support” section of the website. Follow the prompts to install the drivers. Restart your computer when finished and relaunch Messenger.

    Uninstall/Reinstall Messenger

    • If the webcam is recognized by other programs but not Messenger, uninstall the application. Access the “Programs” folder from the “Control Panel” and follow the prompts to uninstall the app. After uninstalling it, restart your computer. Download the latest version of Messenger from the Windows Live website (see "Resources"). Installation will begin as soon as the download completes. During the installation, if your camera is recognized you can configure it to work with the application.

    Additional Troubleshooting

    • Close any other applications that are open that may be using your YouCam. You can also try plugging the camera into a different USB port. Plug the camera directly into the computer rather than into a USB hub. Unplug all of the other USB devices that are connected to your computer and check whether Messenger is now recognizing your camera. As a last resort, you can uninstall and reinstall the webcam software from the computer. Follow the instructions provided with your webcam to ensure it is properly installed.
