Problems With DHCP & VMWare

VMware Player uses Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol to obtain an IP address from your computer, enabling it to use your computer's network adapter to share files and services on your local area network and browse the Web. Accomplishing this requires a working network connection on the host computer and proper software configuration in VMware Player and Windows.

  1. Network Card Disconnected

    • If the network adapter of the virtual machine is disconnected, the virtual machine will be unable to obtain an IP address, access the network or browse the Web. If this is the case, the "Network Adapter" icon at the bottom of the VMware Player window will not display a green circle in the corner. You can connect the network adapter by right-clicking the icon and selecting "Connect."

    Adapter Disabled

    • When you install VMware Player, it creates a network adapter on your computer called "VMware Network Adapter VMnet1." VMware uses this network adapter to access the local area network through your computer. If the adapter is disabled, DHCP may fail. You can enable it from the Network Connections screen in Windows by right-clicking it and selecting "Enable."

    Windows Firewall

    • VMware automatically creates a rule in the Windows Firewall application to allow virtual machines to access your local area network through your computer. If this rule is removed or disabled, you may not be able to obtain an IP address or access the Internet in a virtual machine. You can resolve this issue by creating an exception for "vmware-authd.exe" in the Windows Firewall or reinstalling VMware.

    VMware DHCP Service

    • When you install VMware Player, it installs a Windows service called the VMware DHCP service. This enables a virtual machine to obtain an IP address via DHCP. If this service is not running, DHCP on the virtual machine will fail. You can enable this service from the "Services" menu, accessible from the "Administrative Tools" section of the Windows Control Panel.
