Why Can't You Use Google Reader With Apps?

Google Apps is a Web-based suite of applications that businesses and organizations use to communicate and collaborate. Google Apps users could not always use their accounts to access Google Reader and other Google services. With Google Reader, users can subscribe to their favorite blog and website RSS feeds, and read, share and comment on the posts in one location. In response to customer requests, Google Apps users can now use their Google App account login information to access Google Reader.

  1. Google Apps New Infrastructure

    • In May 2010, Google announced that it was rolling out a new infrastructure that would allow Google Apps users to access more services through Google, including Google Reader. Offered at first only to early adopters, the program is now available to all users.

    Administrator Permissions

    • Google Apps requires businesses and organizations to assign an administrator to the account. The administrator controls which features and services each user within a Google Apps account can access. If you are not a Google Apps administrator, you may be unable to access Google Reader using your Google Apps account. To use Google Reader with your Google Apps account, the administrator of the account has to grant permission.

    Activating Google Reader

    • If you are an administrator of a Google Apps account, visit the Google Apps home page and click “Sign In.” Enter your domain name and then select “Domain Management” from the drop-down menu. After you select the “Go” button, enter your username and password to log in to your Google Apps account. On the Google Apps dashboard, select the tab that reads, “Organization & Users” and then select the “Services” tab. The “Services” tab outlines “Core Google Services,” Marketplace Services” and “Additional Services.” Google Reader is listed under “Additional Services.” Turn the service “On” to activate it for your Google Apps account users. If you would like to deactivate the service in the future, select the “Off” button.

    Google Apps Customer Agreement

    • Services such as Google Reader that are listed under the “Additional Services” tab in Google Apps are not covered by the Google Apps Customer Agreement. Google Apps does not provide technical support for “Additional Services.” You can read the terms of agreement for Google Reader by clicking the “Terms” link listed next to the “On/Off” button.
