The MP4 file is the video equivalent of an MP3 audio file. The data is compressed with information stripped away from the video in order for the contents to fit into a smaller size. Because of this, the MP4 video format is commonly-used by portable digital video players, such as video iPods. However, you can still use the MP4 format with other devices and it is possible to burn an MP4 video onto a DVD and play the contents on a DVD player.

Insert the blank DVD into the DVD burner of your computer. Launch the DVD burning software you have installed on the system.

Select "Video DVD" as the DVD format. Although you can create a data DVD with the MP4 video files, you cannot play this specific format on a DVD player.

Click "Add File" and choose the MP4 video from your computer. Click "OK" and the video appears on the display window of the DVD burning software.

Repeat the process with any other MP4 videos you want to play on the DVD, then click "Burn."

Remove the DVD from your computer once the burn has finished and insert it into a DVD player. Press "Play" and the MP4 video plays on the television through the DVD player.
