Why Can't I Attach a Picture From My iPhoto to Hotmail?

Apple´s iPhoto application does not directly support attaching pictures to an email message. This includes attaching pictures from email clients such as Mac Mail and Web-based email services such as Hotmail. However, you can bypass this iPhoto limitation and attach photos to a Hotmail message using one of several workarounds.

Export and Attach

  • One approach to attaching an image from iPhoto to a Hotmail message requires you to export the image from iPhoto to your desktop. From the desktop, you can attach the image directly to your Hotmail message. This method requires the use of additional space on a computer´s hard drive because copying the image on your desktop creates a new version of the image file. You can, however, delete the image from your desktop after sending the email message.

Install a Plugin

  • Alternatively, you can install the Mac OS X HTTP Mail Plugin on your computer. This plugin allows you to store emails message on the Hotmail server, and later recover the email message for transmission with the image attached. The plugin is available as a free download. However, the plugin also requires Hotmail users to upgrade to a paid Hotmail Plus account prior to using the plugin.

Place In the Body

  • Another option that allows you to attach an iPhoto image to a Hotmail message is to the image to the Hotmail account as part of the body of an email message from the Mail application on your computer. After placing the image in the email´s body, change the size dimensions at the bottom of the window and send the email message to your Hotmail account. From your Hotmail account’s inbox, you can forward the email message to the final recipient.

Configure Mail

  • Configuring your Mail application to work with your Hotmail account is another option that allows you to attach an image from iPhoto to an outgoing Hotmail message. However, this option also requires you to upgrade to a paid Hotmail Plus account. From the Mail application’s main Settings menu, click the “+” icon to add a new account. Enter your name, Hotmail address and password and click the “Create” button. The Mail application will automatically configure and setup your Hotmail Plus account. From the Mail application, you can directly attach iPhoto images to outgoing Hotmail messages.
