A Dell Laser Printer 1110 will not keep memory of every copy it makes.

While it may seem strange that a printer requires memory and storage space, RAM is necessary to the functions of a laser printer. That RAM, however, is temporary storage used while the printer is printing; once the printer is turned off, the RAM is erased. So while the Dell Laser Printer 1110 may keep temporary storage of a document or file, it will not keep memory of every copy it made.

  1. How It Works

    • Laser printers work differently from inkjet printers; while an inkjet printer receives data during the printing process, a laser printer will receive all the data first and then print the full page. This is why your Dell Laser Printer 1110 needs memory; when you print or copy something, a page of your document is loaded to your printer’s memory, and when the data transfer is complete, the printer will print that page. In cases when the print job is larger than the printer’s memory, a printer spooler (software used to assist the printing process) will take over to help print the document.

    Memory Size

    • Because the Dell Laser Printer 1110 is a slightly older model — it was first produced in 2007 — it does not contain much memory. The 1110 features only 2MB of internal memory, which is relatively low from a document standpoint; a one-page document with several graphics will quickly surpass that initial 2MB. As a result, the memory will start to overwrite itself after several new copies are made; the actual number of copies varies based on how much content appears on each page.

    Upgrading

    • As with computer RAM, printer RAM may be removed and replaced. Unlike computer RAM, however, not all computers are capable of accepting upgrades. The 2MB capacity of the Dell Laser Printer 1110 is also its maximum capacity; it cannot be expanded. Because the memory cannot be expanded, there is no chance for adding extra space that may keep copies stored in the RAM.

    Data Security

    • Because the Dell Laser Printer 1110 features a small amount of internal memory, it is best used for personal or home office or small office purposes. While this can raise concerns in terms of reselling or recycling the printer, you must remember none of your data or documents will be stored in the printer’s memory. Because the memory is wiped clear when the printer is turned off, any copies you made will still be secure and confidential.
