Ideas for T-Shirt Iron-Ons

You can customize any T-shirt with iron-ons.

With iron-on transfers, a side of paper with a printed image is pressed onto the fabric and then ironed, which transfers the image to the fabric. Iron-ons enable you to create customized T-shirts with images or designs. These images can be taken with a digital camera or created through various software programs. They are then printed with an inject printer, using specialized transfer paper. Heat transfer is the most affordable way to transfer a design on a single T-shirt. Also, heat transfers can be performed on 100 percent cotton.

  1. Family Events

    • Print out family photos on the iron-on transfer. Have each family member choose a photo to iron on to a light colored T-shirt to wear during a family event. All that is needed is a color inkjet printer, iron-on transfer paper and a hand iron.

    Fundraising

    • Raise money for a school charity by creating custom T-shirts. Ask students to bring their own images to scan. Use a printer to create iron-on printouts and transfer them to T-shirts or sell the iron-on transfers to parents so they can transfer images to T-shirts at a later date. Alternatively, create several shirts in bulk that are related to the money raising event.

    Holidays

    • Create holiday-themed T-shirts that have a personal touch. For example, if a family member likes snowboarding, create a graphic of an elf riding on a snowboard. During Halloween -- if a family member is trick-or-treating as a witch -- create an iron-on with a graphic that resembles a witch.

    Identification

    • Create an artistic font and print the font on to an iron-on. Certain software programs allow users to quickly create stylized text and print it on anything, including an iron-on transfer. When members of an online club meet for the first time, send each member a T-shirt with a stylized name on it so that each member can identify the others.

    Other Objects

    • Iron-on transfers can be used for more than T-shirts. These iron-ons will also transfer to bags and mouse pads. Consider making a transfer for a friend or family member and giving it to them, instead of making a T-shirt, so the recipient can use it however she wants.

    Business Opportunities

    • Heat presses will achieve a higher-quality transfer than home irons, but can be costly. Heat transfer paper designed specifically for this process will also improve the quality of the iron-on transfer. Consider using iron-on transfers and heat presses to create a T-shirt business that produces shirts for companies and sports teams.
