What Is Considered Appropriate Office Attire for Men?
Depending on where you work, you might have a specific dress code to adhere to. Some workplaces require uniforms; others give limited free reign in picking attire as long as it is appropriate and conforms to guidelines established by the company. To avoid violating your company's rules, it's essential that you know where your company stands regarding the clothing you choose to wear when reporting to work.

Know the Dress Code
-
If, when visiting a company for an interview, you have a chance to see the actual office area, the dress code will be obvious. If all the men are in dark suits and the women in business skirts, you can safely assume the work environment is anything but casual. Even if you don't see your future co-workers in person, you will most likely be told the dress code upon being hired.
Strict Business Attire
-
Some offices, law firms for example, have very strict dress codes that require traditional business attire. This is typically prominent in professional business or otherwise very conservative offices. Suits, dress jackets, silk ties and closed-toe leather shoes are a must. It is also important to wear dark, non-contrasting colors; nothing loud or bright that offsets the professionalism of your attire. Cuff links and pocket squares -- either silk or linen -- complete the look.

Business Casual Attire
-
At the other end of the spectrum, business casual attire simply means casual clothing that is still appropriate for business. Leave the suits and ties on their hangers. Pull on some khakis and your favorite golf shirt, and you're good to go. To take it a step further, even your sneakers meet business casual standards.
General Business Attire
-
Many offices do not go with strictly traditional business attire or business casual, but instead settle on general business attire as a happy medium. General business attire still requires a tie and collared shirt. However, you do not need to go so far as pocket squares or cuff links. In fact, your office may not even require a sports jacket.
