Pop Culture Theme Parties
Pop culture is a theme that means something different from one person to the next. While some people include past pop culture icons like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis and hula hoops, others are much more comfortable with current trends like Lady Gaga, Facebook and the Twilight series. With such a broad base, there are some important steps to take to make sure your pop culture theme party is tucked snugly into a niche that everyone will be able to easily understand.

Invitations
-
When designing a party invitation for a pop culture theme party, it is important to identify just what you mean by "pop culture." The best way to do this is to include images and phrases that can be easily identified by those who receive them. For example, if you are planning a Lady Gaga theme party, you might want to place an image of Gaga on the front of the invitation and then incorporate some of her lyrics into the time, place and RSVP sections on the back. You could even format it like the liner notes for a CD and place the invite in a jewel case. The key to the invite is that it conveys what you are expecting of those coming to the party, and what they should expect when they get there.
Food
-
Food can make or break a party. Success is usually achieved by being playful but also offering things that everyone can enjoy. If you've chosen a "Twilight Saga" theme, you may include some blood red wine in cups that leave glitter on the fingers of anyone who grabs them. This way everyone would then "sparkle" like the vampires in the series do. Stay away from cliche's like lady fingers or anything that would be served at a Halloween party. Be more creative with items like deviled eggs with red-dyed yolks or beef jerky that has an unknown origin (leave a bit of fake fur near the plate).

Music
-
Parties mean music. Without music, a party is simply a gathering of friends. Make sure you have access to the hottest pop culture hits either on the radio, through your iPod or over your computer. The music should be loud enough that everyone can hear it but not so loud that your neighbors call the cops. If you plan ahead, you can have everyone coming bring a CD or flash drive full of MP3s. And of course, you'll want to keep the music consistent with the theme of the party.
Activities
-
Pop culture-themed activities can range from playing a pop culture-themed board game like "Scene-It" or "Trivial Pursuit" to taking a more interactive approach and engaging in a modified version of a reality TV show. To be a successful host, it is important not to overload your party with activities. Video games, ladder ball or bean bag tosses can be used as fill-in games that people can mingle around. These games can be given a pop culture feel by pasting pictures of current celebrities on them. How much more fun would bean bag toss be if you were aiming at President Obama, Justin Bieber and Charlie Sheen?
