Have kids work on crafts to learn how to treat each other well.

The concept of treating others as you wish to be treated is universal. This is a fundamental teaching of every major theology in the world. Create craft projects with your family that will promote this idea and encourage both children and adults to follow this ideology on a daily basis. Using basic craft supplies and techniques, you can make decorative and instructional displays and keepsakes.

  1. Feelings Ruler

    • Have children trace a 12-inch ruler on a sheet of construction paper or card stock. Mark each of the inches on both sides of the paper. On one side, have them write things people do that make them feel bad. Write one item per inch marking. On the other side, let them write down something someone could do to make them feel good in the same situation. For example, one side could start with people ignoring you when you feel sad and the other side could start with asking someone how they feel when they look sad. Color the ruler and add decorative stickers, if desired.

    Daily Affirmation Cards

    • Make a deck of 31 cards from heavy scrapbook paper or card stock. On each card, write one thing you want to do to treat someone how you would like to be treated. Each day, you and your children will draw a card from the deck and follow the direction on the card. For example, write things like “hold a door open for someone” or “tell someone they make you smile.” Each month, shuffle the deck and start again. As time goes on, each of these items will become a habit. Embellish the cards with stamps, stickers and glitter.

    Scrapbook

    • Create a scrapbook with your kids, using decorative or construction paper. Stack several pages together, cut them into a shape, such as a diamond, oval or triangle. Punch holes and tie with ribbon or yarn. Decorate the scrapbook with stickers, stamps and other embellishments. At the end of each day, write one thing someone did that made you feel happy or good about something. Turn the page over and write how you will do the same thing for someone else tomorrow. At the end of each week, look through the pages and see how much better you feel and how much better others feel because of how you treated them.

    Poster

    • Help your children learn how the concept of treating others the way you want to be treated is taught around the world. Print out an image of the globe and glue onto poster board. Research on the Internet to find the teachings of different religions of the world and the words they use to convey this message to their followers. Write the words on the poster around the globe. Alternatively, type the messages and print on small pieces of paper, cut out and glue onto the poster.
