The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes wage statistics for dive technicians under the category of commercial divers. The average salary of a dive technician varies by geographical area and by sector of employment.

    • The average annual salary for divers and dive technicians working in the U.S. as of May 2010 was $56,400, with a median average salary of $51,360. The lowest-paid 10 percent of workers were paid $31,890 or less per year, while the highest-paid 10 percent earned $89,560 or more per year. Fifty percent of all commercial divers earned an average annual salary ranging from $37,940 to $67,160.

    Salaries by State

    • As of 2010, the state in which commercial divers were paid the highest average wages was New Jersey, where the average annual salary was reported as $79,010. The second highest-paying state for the occupation was California, where divers and dive technicians earned an average of $76,500. New York, Washington and Hawaii were also top-paying states. Of the states that reported earnings of divers in 2010, those in South Carolina were paid the lowest and earned an average yearly salary of $38,830.

    Wages by Area

    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the highest-paid divers and dive technicians were employed in the Vallejo-Fairfield metropolitan area of California and earned an average of $113,660 per year. Those working in the Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura metropolitan division of California earned an average of $85,280 each year. The only nonmetropolitan area reporting wages for divers and technicians in 2010 was New Iberia, Louisiana, where workers earned an average annual salary of $51,430.

    Pay by Industry

    • In 2010, more commercial divers and technicians were employed as support for the mining industry than in any other sector of employment and earned an average annual salary of $59,630. Other heavy and civil engineering construction, which accounted for nearly as many diving and dive technician jobs, paid an average annual salary of $66,100. Those employed in support activities for water transportation earned an average of $43,750 per year.
