Saddle Bag Craft for Kids
Saddlebags are bags that attach to the back of saddles on a variety of different objects. Originally used for horseback riding, saddlebags have gone on to be used on bikes and motorcycles as well as other items with saddles on them. Saddle bag crafts for kids range from saddle bag decorations to creating their own saddle bags.

Trail Mix Saddle Bags
-
This Western themed party craft is designed for young kids to create their own "saddle bags" and fill them with a variety of trail mix. Start by giving each kid a brown paper bag. This will be their saddle bag. Have them place stickers, rhinestones and pen markings all over their own bag to make it a one of a kind item. Once they are done decorating, lay out a series of bowls filled with different types of trail mix foods such as nuts, berries and pretzels. Have them fill their bags up before finishing the craft.
Bike Saddle Bag
-
If your kids are fans of bikes, this saddle bag craft will give them a place to store water bottles and other items they may need on a ride. Have your child start with a small canvas bag, some dowel wood, two toe straps and a craft knife; you will assist with the knife portion of the craft. Measure the distance between the two hooks on the actual saddle of your child's bike. From here, take this distance and cut two slits into the top of the bag with this same distance in between. Have your child push the two toe straps into the slits, cutting slits on the other side of the bag so that the straps slide through them. Once the straps are secure, place a stick in between the straps for even weight distribution. Lock the straps under the bike seat until secure.

Saddle Bag Horse Decorations
-
A simple and fun way to have your kids design and customize their own saddle bags is by adding beads, rhinestones and other stones to their bags in unique patterns. After purchasing pre-made saddle bags for each kid, have them sit down with craft glue and begin sticking the stones onto the bag. Have them create unique patterns with the stones or have them follow a specific pattern that you have already performed on a separate saddle bag. If the craft glue is not working, help the kids use a glue gun to keep the stones on the bag.
Caution
-
While saddle bag crafts are a fun and enjoyable activity for kids, it is important to use proper safety precautions when having your kids handle items such as craft knives or hot glue guns. If you are using a hot glue gun, always make sure the gun is in the off position when not being used. While the gun is on, make sure there is a piece of cardboard under it to catch any excess glue that may drift. Do not allow young children to handle box cutters or knives.
