Bronze Painting Techniques
If you have a bronze object at home, like a lamp or vase, you can give it a face lift with a bit of paint. There are several painting techniques you can consider when painting bronze, from using primers to metallic paints. Pick the technique that works best for you to get a professional finish.
-
Primer
-
Because bronze is a metal, it can sometimes be difficult for paint to adhere to it. To simplify the painting process consider using a primer. Primer can be found at any craft shop and is applied in a thin layer to the bronze. Let it dry before applying the paint technique of your choice. Use a primer on any type of bronze object when you want all of the metal covered up, like a bronze bowl for a dining table centerpiece.
Sponging
-
A sponging technique can be used when painting bronze, as it allows some of the bronze coloring to show through. Use a basic kitchen sponge and dip it in acrylic paint, then dab over the bronze item. You can use as much or as little paint as you want. Sponging gives an artsy flair that would work well as an accessory for a teen's bedroom, like a bronze picture frame or mirror frame to hang on the wall.
-
Spraying
-
There are several brands of spray paint designed specifically to be used when painting over metal. Purchase a spray paint in the color of your choice, and then place the bronze item on a sheet of newspaper. Apply a thin, even coat of the spray to the item and allow to dry. Apply a second coat if necessary. This technique works well for items that might be displayed outside, like a bronze lawn ornament or garden chair for a patio.
Metallic Paint
-
If you like the look of metal, but want to change out the bronze color for something else, use a metallic paint. Metallic paints come in shades like pewter, silver, brass and gold and can be found at most craft stores. Apply the paint to the bronze, using as many layers as needed to completely cover the bronze. Use metallic paint for a variety of bronze objects, such as bathroom soap holders or a vase for a hallway table.
