How to Glue EPDM to Wood

Steve Hamilton

Ethylene propylene diene terpolymer, or EPDM, roofing membranes are durable and quick to apply, making them the first choice of many contractors for flat and low-slope roofs. According to the EPDM Roofing Association, EPDM accounts for more than 1 billion square feet of new roof coverings in the United States and is the most frequently used roofing material in the marketplace.

Use a paint roller to apply bonding adhesive.

Step 1

Prepare the wooden surface to be covered. Make sure it is clean, dry and has no obstructions or sharp edges that could puncture or interfere with the membrane.

Step 2

Measure the area to be covered. Cut the EPDM membrane 3 to 9 inches larger on all sides than the size of the surface. Settle the membrane onto the surface and let it relax into place.

Step 3

Fold the membrane back on itself about halfway. Check again to make sure it’s clear of debris underneath. Pour some bonding adhesive onto the wooden surface and use the paint roller to spread it evenly. Apply adhesive to the EPDM membrane the same way. Let the adhesive dry for the recommended time.

Step 4

Carefully unfold the membrane a little at a time onto the glued surface, pressing it down along the folded edge from the inside and smoothing it with your hands. Work slowly and methodically, making sure not to wrinkle the material or trap any air bubbles. Let the extra membrane hang over the edges of the surface. Use a clean roller to roll out any bubbles you might have missed.

Step 5

Fold the other half of the membrane back onto the part you just completed and repeat the process for this side. Trim off the excess material all around.
