Basket Crafts With Five Loaves and Two Fishes
In the story about Jesus feeding the 5,000 in the New Testament, Jesus employs his disciples to pass around food to 5,000 hungry people using only two fish and five loaves of bread. This story teaches children about the kindness and power of Jesus and the importance of faith. By making basket crafts with five loaves and two fish in Sunday School, children can express creativity and gain new skills while learning a Bible story.

Paper Bag Basket
-
Sunday school students can use brown paper bags and construction paper to make a basket craft with five loaves and two fish. Have students open the bag and roll down the top to make a small basket. Instruct them to trace and cut fish and loaves from construction paper and paste the shapes on the inside of the bag. Have them cut a strip of construction paper and staple it on both sides of the basket to create a handle, allowing the children to tote their bags around.
Woven Cloth Basket
-
Older Sunday school students can create a cloth basket using cotton fabric and piping cord. Have the students cut the fabric into long 1/2 inch strips and coil them tightly around the cord. As the students wrap along the cord, they will coil it into a cinnamon bun shape to form a base. Have them keep winding the coil upward, making larger circles as they go. Continue wrapping fabric around the cord, stopping every few inches to slide the fabric between two layers, wrapping the cords together. After building up the sides, students need to cut the cord at the top and seal it by tying off the fabric. They can cut fish and loaves from felt to place in the baskets.

Clothespin Basket
-
Older children can make clothespin baskets to hold loaves and fish. Ask the students to form a circle with a piece of wire and thicken the wire by wrapping crepe paper around it. Tell them to slide springless clothespins down the wire and wrap crepe paper around the heads of the clothespins to hold them in place. Have them cover a second wire with crepe paper to create a handle that they can attach to the basket. Students can cut fish and loaves from sheets of foam and add them to the basket.
Berry Container Baskets
-
Younger students can practice weaving while designing a berry container basket. Allow children to weave strips of ribbon or crepe paper through the openings around berry containers. Have them tie a ribbon around the rim of the containers on both sides to create a handle. Students can create three-dimensional loaves and fish by cutting shapes from paper, stuffing them with cotton and stapling them together.
