Can I Export My Tweets?

The Twitter microblogging service only allows your tweets to be searched for a short period of time after they have been posted, making it impossible to use the Twitter website as a long-term archive. Several workarounds are available for exporting your tweets and history to keep your Twitter archived in third-party software and websites.

  1. RSS

    • Twitter used to provide all tweets in publicly-available and advertised RSS feeds, which were easy to subscribe to in order to create a permanent tweet archive in any RSS feed reader. This is still available by using the special RSS feed for API requests to Twitter. Replace the word "username" in the following URL with your own username or public Twitter stream you wish to archive:

      http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/user_timeline.rss?screen_name=username

Add this URL to any RSS feed reader to create an archive of tweets from that username. This archive will be maintained for as long as the RSS reader stores old feed posts; most computer applications and Google Reader will store RSS feeds permanently.

    Store Tweets in Evernote

    • Add any individual tweet to Evernote by mentioning the Twitter user @myEN anywhere in your tweet. This will copy the tweet to an Evernote Twitter account, which will in turn add it to your Evernote archive after you have added your Twitter username to your Evernote archive settings.

    Convert to iCal Format

    • The Twistory website will convert a Twitter feed into the iCal calendar format, which can then be subscribed to by most calendaring software or online calendar services. (Note: The Apple calendar application iCal is compatible with the iCal subscription format, but the two are otherwise unrelated.) Twistory can be used to calendar your own tweets or the public tweets from any other user.

    Third-Party Archives

    • Numerous third-party tools can be used to capture Twitter feeds and hashtag searches. The Archivist is a Windows application that is customized to capture Twitter searches for hashtags and will update these searches periodically when the application is left open. The online tool Twapper Keeper performs a similar service. Integrate Twitter feeds into your WordPress blog with the Twitter Tools WordPress plugin. If you have access to your own Internet server with PHP and MySQL, the server applications SweetCron and AmpliFeeder can each subscribe to your Twitter feed and then publish them as Web pages or store them in MySQL databases for future archiving and manipulation.
