Flash Player in Google Maps Not Working

Google Maps uses the Adobe Flash player to render maps within your computer's Web browser, but not all display errors within Google Maps are a result of a faulty Adobe Flash player. If updating your Flash player doesn't remedy the difficulties you experience with Google Maps, a different cause exists for the problem.

  1. Updating Flash Player

    • If you believe a problem with the Adobe Flash player may be behind difficulties you experience using Google Maps -- for example, the animation of the maps loads slowly or flickers -- make sure your Flash player is updated to the latest version. You can always upgrade the Flash player for free via the official Adobe website. Note that you'll need to exit out of the browser and re-open it in order for the updates to take effect.

    Web Browser Version

    • Google Maps requirements a minimum of Internet Explorer 7.0, Firefox 3.6 or Google Chrome in order to function properly, irrespective of any issues that relate to Adobe Flash. If you haven't updated your browser recently, visit the browser's website and download the latest update. Close out of the browser and re-open a window to attempt using Google Maps again.

    System Memory

    • Adobe Flash player controls animation within Google Maps, but not all difficulties relating to the speed with which animation renders have to do with Flash. For example, your computer's memory may be overextended, causing longer than expected delays when you attempts to drag a Google map to change your view or zoom in or out. To optimize system memory usage, exit out of any applications you aren't actively using, including idle Firefox tabs and windows.

Google Maps for iPhone and iPod Touch

    • Apple iPhone and iPod Touch devices don't use Flash at all, so if you experience Google Maps-related problem on such mobile devices, Flash can't be to blame. The surest way to remedy Google Maps errors on Apple-powered mobile devices is to plug the device into the computer, open iTunes and click "Yes" when prompted to update the device's operating system.
