WordPress Network Is Not Creating Subdomains
WordPress has multi-site capabilities built in to the software with the latest versions. The WordPress network sites are created as subdomains to the main blog domain, but sometimes issues occur and the subdomains are not created correctly. The additional blogs are dependent on the subdomains existing, so the multi-site capabilities are not able to be used before the issues are fixed.

Server Settings
-
WordPress installations that use the network feature require specific Web server settings to work properly. If the settings are not enabled or the appropriate script is not present on the server, the subdomain creation process can fail. The Web server needs to have Apache enabled. The file httpd.conf requires a wildcard subdomain configuration so the WordPress network works properly with subdomains. Additionally, wildcard subdomains must also be enabled in the DNS of the WordPress domain. Your Web host may handle the necessary server configuration or direct you to use the control panel provided with the server.
Network Settings
-
The network feature on WordPress is not enabled by default. It also cannot be enabled through the WordPress backend. This feature is edited through the wp-config.php file that is located in the base directory of the WordPress installation. In addition to other WordPress configuration data, the WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE variable must be added and set to a true value in order to provide access to the network features. A blogs.dir folder is also required by the network feature. The rest of the network enabling process occurs through the WordPress backend. The script generates code for both the wp-config.php file and the .htaccess file.

Plugins
-
WordPress plugins can sometime interfere with the normal functioning of the script. If you are encountering difficulty with successfully creating network sites on your WordPress blog, disable all plugins currently installed through the Plugin panel. Once the subdomain issue is fixed, the plugins can be enabled one at a time to determine which one is causing the problem specifically. You need to obtain an alternative plugin or a plugin update for any that are causing issues.
Considerations
-
The WordPress multi-site network must be configured according to instructions for the installation process to be successful. If your server or WordPress settings don't match perfectly with the requirements of the network feature, it will not create subdomains properly. You can also map WordPress network sites to individual domains or subdirectories if you use a different setup process. WordPress network blogs are administered through the base blog installation. A drop down menu displays all of the blogs contained on this network.
