I Cannot Hyperlink in Messenger

Instant messaging services such as Windows Live Messenger are useful for quick communications when you need to pass along information to another person. However, certain security concerns can cause a variety of operational problems with instant messaging. At times, these security threats can result in operational problems with an instant message service; for Windows Messenger, these threats sometimes result in an inability to send or receive hyperlinks in messages.

  1. WIndows Security

    • The ability to use hyperlinks in Windows Live Messenger has been disabled at times by Windows in response to security threats to Windows Live Messenger users. In November 2010, the Windows Live Blog reported that Windows disabled hyperlinks in Messenger to stop a self-replicating worm virus from attacking users. When hyperlinks are disabled in Messenger, users may still send Web addresses in messages, but the user receiving the message cannot click a link to visit the page.

    Messenger Worms

    • Windows Live Messenger and its predecessor, MSN Messenger, have both been targeted by viruses and worms using the instant messaging service to replicate itself. In February 2005, CNET News reported that MSN Messenger was targeted by the Bropia.F worm, a Trojan virus for the more disruptive worm Agabot.ajc. SpyEyes and the MSN Picture virus are two other worms that have affected Windows Live Messenger users; these worms can either steal data from your computer, affect computer use and send copies of itself to people listed in your contacts.

    Link Reviver

    • The ability to receive hyperlinks in Messenger can be reactivated by downloading a link reviver program available for Windows Live Messenger and MSN Messenger users. A ZIP file containing the compressed Messenger Link Reviver program can be downloaded from freeware sites such as MediaFire. Run the EXE file contained in the ZIP file to enable hyperlinks for your version of Windows Live Messenger. The link reviver program will automatically restart Messenger with the updated settings.

    Hex Editing

    • You can also adjust the settings of Messenger with a hex editing program to enable hyperlinks in instant messages. A hex editor, such as XVI32, can open the binary code of any file, allowing a user to adjust program settings directly through the code. Download a hex editor from the Internet; some, like the XVI32 editor, are available for free. Open the hex editor, and then use the program to open the file "msnmsgr.exe." Use the Find or Search function in your hex editor to search for "hotlinks." Click on one character in the word and change it to a different character; for example, replace the "o" to change "hotlinks" to "hatlinks." Save your changes. The next time you open Messenger, hyperlinks will be reactivated.
