A Speaker on a Laptop Can Only Play on One Side
Laptops usually come with left and right speakers for a balanced stereo output. However, if the sound is only one-sided, the issue is usually with the sound settings or the drivers that allow the sound processor to communicate with the computer's firmware. Microsoft provides solutions to solve audio speaker problems to maximize sound output.

Sound Properties
-
In most cases, sound can only be heard from one speaker if the laptop's sound properties aren't configured properly. The sound properties allow you to not only adjust speaker volume, but balance the speaker levels. If the left and right speaker sound levels aren't balanced, sound will only be heard from one side. To check your speakers, go to "Control Panel," "Hardware and Sound" and then "Sound." Under the Playback tab, click "Speakers" and then "Properties" to display your default speaker's settings. From the levels tab, click "Balance" to view the speaker levels. If the left and right speaker levels aren't in the middle, you won't have a balanced sound output. Drag the sliders to the middle to balance the speaker output.
Software
-
In addition to the sound controls that come with the operating system, several media or video programs such as Windows Media Player and iTunes allow you to adjust the speaker settings directly from the program's interface. Even if the operating system's speaker settings are balanced, you'll still only hear sound from one side if the left and right levels on the program aren't balanced. Adjusting the audio settings for a third-party program vary, so refer to the manual or documentation.

Sound Processors
-
Sound processor problems or missing drivers can contribute to one-sided sound outputs. If the sound driver is damaged, uninstalling it and reinstalling a new copy can solve sound problems. If you open the Device Manager, expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" section. If a question or exclamation mark appears next to the default sound driver, it means it's not performing as expected. Download and install the latest sound drivers directly from the computer manufacturer's website.
Tips
-
If you're still experiencing sound problems, sometimes restarting the computer reboots problematic hardware. If the sound is still one-sided, the speaker is probably blown. If such is the case, contact the computer manufacturer for possible repairs. Alternatively, you can use an use an external speaker system. Most laptops have an audio input that allows you to connect external speakers with separate volume controls.
