Favicons are the small images that appear on tabs to represent a website.

When you save a website to your bookmarks bar or your bookmarks folder in Firefox, a small image representing the website appears next to the name of the bookmark. This icon is referred to as a Favicon. Sometimes, however, the Favicons do not load in Firefox. This can be due to your Firefox theme, an error when saving the bookmark, because you have not visited the website since bookmarking it, your history settings, or because the website does not have a Favicon.

  1. Firefox Theme

    • If no Favicons are appearing, regardless of the website you are viewing, it may be because your theme does not support Favicons. Firefox has a variety of different themes that changes the way a browser looks. Users can change their theme at any time. However, not all themes are created by Firefox -- some are made by third-party groups, so they may not be compatible with all Firefox settings, including Favicons. Change your theme to have Favicons work again.

    Use the Bookmark

    • After you have bookmarked an item, whether it is on your bookmarks bar or in your bookmarks folder, a Favicon for that website will appear next to the bookmark. If you have bookmarked the website to view it at a later time, you will see a blank space where the Favicon should be because Favicons do not appear immediately. To have the Favicon appear next to the bookmark, you must open the website and allow it to load. Once it is loaded, the Favicon will appear.

    Favicon Did Not Load Properly

    • There are times when you have visited a website after bookmarking it, the Favicon still will not appear. This can be because when saving the bookmark, the Favicon was not saved properly due to various small issues, including a problem with your Internet connection or the website you bookmarked. To fix this, remove the bookmark and add it again. Then visit the website; the Favicon will load.

    Browser History

    • The settings in your browser history sometimes may cause your Favicons not to load at all. This can be because there is too much history for it to store any other information, including Favicons, or because a website has changed its Favicon and both are stored in your history. To fix this, click "Tools" at the top of the screen. Then select "Options." Under the "Privacy" section, set "Firefox will" to "Never Remember History."

    Website Does Not Have Favicons

    • If some websites still are not loading Favicons after you have tried to change your theme, re-added the bookmark, visited the website, and changed your history settings, the website may not have a Favicon. If a website you bookmark does not have a Favicon, it will appear as blank in your bookmarks bar or bookmarks folder. To check if a website does not have a Favicon, open the website in a different browser or on a different computer and check if the Favicon space is still blank.
