Joomla! is an open source content management system.

Joomla provides Web developers free tools for Web publishing and online applications. These tools allow Web developers to customize Web and software projects hosted in the cloud by CloudAccess.net. The Joomla! Project is composed of two groups that attract hundreds of volunteers. One group focuses on production and the other focuses on community. The Joomla! Project is funded by nonprofit organization Open Source Matters, Inc.

  1. History

    • Joomla was launched in 2005 and has been community-operated since the beginning. Due to its free and open source nature, Joomla's popularity grew quickly with Web developers. Companies using Joomla range from small bloggers to Harvard University to McDonald's. In 2011, Joomla won a third Packt Publishing Open Source Award for CMS. By this time the platform powered 2.7 percent of the Web.

    Features

    • Features offered by Joomla include page caching, RSS feeds, printable versions of pages, news flashes, blogs, polls, search, support and language translation.
Working in the cloud eliminates server issues that used to hinder Web developers. Joomla allows developers to build online businesses with their own domains, which includes software service companies. CloudAccess.net takes complexities out of content management by providing a user-friendly interface.

    Competition

    • The dominant open source content management systems have been WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. WordPress has been the most popular system out of several dozen systems with Joomla as a distant runner-up, even with over 85,000 downloads per week. Joomla is the leading platform for third-party developer support on Guru, a website where developers can market their skills. More books have been written on WordPress than any other CMS, while Joomla is a runner-up, averaging 13 new books in print per year.

    Popularity

    • Joomla's popularity grew in 2011 thanks to its loyal community of Web developers and software programmers. Downloads of Joomla's CMS software increased by 38 percent from the previous year. The system has been downloaded more than 27 million times since its inception. Joomla also has seen growth in the amount of development being done by its outside vendors. An interactive culture is expanding to fuel the growth of the platform. This culture consists of more than 225,000 registered developers working on developing extensions and the core codebase.
