Help With Google and an Acer Laptop Webcam
Google Chat enables users to video and voice chat with one another from within Gmail. The associated plug-in installs to the Web browser, enabling the application to recognize the webcam, and send and receive audio and video feed. Google Chat should work without issue once the plug-in for the application is installed, but certain problems can prevent the Acer laptop webcam from interacting with the software.
-
Outdated Plug-in
-
Software developers regularly release updates to their applications, as older versions tend to contain bugs that impede performance. If the Google Chat plug-in is outdated, the extension might fail to detect or interface with the Acer webcam, preventing the device from streaming video to another user. Download the plug-in from the Google website to get the most recent release.
Conflicting Software
-
Plug-ins enable a browser to perform additional functions. Since these extensions add extra capabilities to the software, they can interfere with one another and impact each other's performance. Adobe Flash Player and Google Chat are the two plug-ins needed to use voice chat and video chat from within the Web browser; disabling all other extensions might restore function to Google Chat and to the Acer laptop camera.
-
Corrupted Flash
-
Google Chat uses Adobe Flash Player to access the webcam from within the browser. Old or buggy versions of Adobe Flash Player can interfere with the operation of the plug-in; downloading and installing the latest version of the extension can fix coding errors that are preventing Google Chat from getting the data it needs from the Acer laptop webcam. Uninstalling and then reinstalling Flash can also fix any inconsistencies with the extension.
Webcam Driver
-
Similar to how Adobe Flash Player enables Google Chat to interface with the webcam, a device driver enables the webcam to interface with Windows. If the device driver is missing, corrupt, old or incompatible, the webcam will fail to function in both the Web browser and all other applications. Device Manager, accessible from the Control Panel, lists the webcam under Imaging Devices. If the name USB 2.0 Camera or USB Video Device appears instead of the device name, if an exclamation mark appears to the left of the device, or if no imaging device is listed altogether, you should download the webcam driver from the Acer website and install it to the PC.
