Internet Explorer is a free download.

Norton is a security software that aims to identify and remove viruses and other malicious content you encounter on the Internet. If you are having issues installing a Norton product while using Internet Explorer 8, make sure that your Norton product is compatible with Internet Explorer 8 and that your provided the correct product key.

  1. Norton Version

    • If you are attempting to install or run Norton 2008, the program will not work with Internet Explorer 8. Norton 2009 and newer versions, including Norton 360 3.0 are compatible with Internet Explorer 8. There is no way to override your Norton or Internet Explorer programs to force Norton 2008 to run -- you must either upgrade to a newer version of the Norton software, or get the latest version of Internet Explorer.

    Upgrading Internet Explorer

    • If you want to keep Norton 2008, the easiest solution is to update your version of Internet Explorer. At the time of publication, Internet Explorer 9 is the most current version of the browser. Update to the newest version of Internet Explorer by going to the Internet Explorer section of the Microsoft website on any browser and clicking the "Download Internet Explorer [Version Number]" button.

    Product Key Problems

    • If you enter the incorrect product key for your Norton download, the program will not complete successfully on your computer. The product key consists of five sets of letters and numbers. You can find the key on the back of the envelope for your product CD, or in the confirmation email for your purchase if you bought an electronic copy of the software. If an installation fails, double-check your product key, paying special attention to similar characters, such as the letter "O" and number "0."

    Exceeding Maximum Number of Computers

    • Each purchase of Norton software can only be downloaded onto a set number of computers. Once you reach your maximum allowed number of computers, any future installations will be denied. To find out how many more computers you can install your Norton software on, sign in to your Norton account and click on your Norton product in the "Product" tab. If the number "0" appears in the "Remaining Activations" line, you are not allowed to install the software to any more computers. If you have yet to set up an account, click the grey "Sign In" icon at the top of the Norton website and then "Sign Up Now." After providing your personal information, such as name and email address, click "Sign Up." After providing the license key for your software, you can check the number of remaining installs available.
