Experiment with different clothing and accessories when creating a layered ensemble.

A little black dress, often also referred to as LBD, is a staple in the wardrobe of many women. The timeless dress can be worn in many different styles, ranging from casual to sophisticated. During the cold winter months, the little black dress often ends up in the back of the closet. However, just because it's cold out doesn't mean you can't be stylish. Keep your little black dress in heavy rotation in winter by layering it with other clothes.

  1. Daytime Casual

    • To achieve a casual look for daytime you must dress down your little black dress, instead of dressing it up. Layer your dress with a wool, long-sleeved cardigan or put on a chunky winter sweater -- a turtle-neck sweater is ideal. Covering the top part of the dress instantly makes it double as a skirt. A pair of knit tights and warm winter boots can keep your legs and feet warm. Complete your winter ensemble with a scarf, gloves, winter hat and pea coat.

    Nighttime Appropriate

    • Whether you're meeting friends at the local coffee shop or are going to see a nighttime movie, a little black dress paired with a wool blazer is the ideal look. If you don't own a blazer, borrow one from your boyfriend. If your little black dress has short sleeves, wear a long-sleeved shirt underneath it to provide extra warmth. Put on tights to keep your legs warm, and finish your look with high-heeled shoes or boots. A scarf, hat, gloves and winter coat are optional.

    Special Occasions

    • Many people attend parties during the winter holidays. For these special occasions you can pull your little black dress out of the closet. For a festive, weather-appropriate appearance, layer your dress with a colorful, cropped blazer jacket and a fake fur coat. Additionally, you can accentuate your waist with a belt and lengthen your legs with high heels. Wear tights to keep your legs warm or wear a pair of skinny jeans under your little black dress.

    Layering Tips

    • Layered clothes don't have to look bulky to keep you warm in cold weather. The first layer, which is closest to the body, must be of a comfortable material that keeps you warm and absorbs perspiration. Avoid itchy wool fabrics; choose nylon and polyester fabrics instead. Wool, cotton and fleece fabrics make ideal second layers because they provide warmth. Wear a water-resistant winter coat as a third layer to protect you from the cold weather.
