How to Dress Up Like an Oil Spill
The result of an oil spill, while catastrophic to the environment, can be a object for protest to place blame. One way to draw attention to an oil spill is to make an oil spill costume. You can make a costume to dress up as an oil spill for Halloween or to attend a costume party. To do this you need to prepare all of the materials that will be used to create the costume.
-
Prepare the Oil
-
Pour black acrylic paint into a small plastic container. Add a small amount of warm water and mix it with a paint stirrer. Add additional water and stir the mixture until you reach the desired consistency. Transfer the acrylic paint into a plastic squeeze bottle.
Make a Prop
-
Obtain a toy bird, such as a duck or goose. Place your squeeze bottle about 8 to 10 inches above the toy bird. Squeeze the bottle to apply the acrylic paint to the toy. Cover the head and body with the paint. To add a touch or realism you can wipe the paint from the head of the toy with a cloth or rag. Allow two to three hours for the paint to completely dry.
-
Create Oil Covered Suit
-
Purchase a bio-chemical suit to use for your costume. Lay the suit outside on the ground and apply the paint. Cover the surface of the suit randomly by squeezing the bottle. Carefully lift up the suit and hang it vertically to allow the paint to drip down the suit. Add more paint, if needed, to create an oil-covered suit.
Hard Hat and Gloves
-
Lay out newspaper to cover the floor. Set a white hard hat on the newspaper. Hold the squeeze bottle of paint 2 to 3 feet above the hard hat. Drip the paint onto the hat to create a splatter effect. This will mimic oil drops from a bird or other animal hitting the hat. Complete your oil spill costume with a pair of black rubber gloves.
