Tricks with IMail

Ipswitch Messaging, a developer of messaging software for small and midsized businesses, offers the IMail Server, full service email server backed by Ipswitch's tech support team. This product works alongside Ipswitch Instant Messaging, Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync to facilitate workplace communication. Though IMail and its sister versions -- including IMail Secure and IMail Express -- are fairly straightforward, users can take advantage of a few tricks to enhance their email experience.

  1. Utilities

    • For IMail customers, Ipswitch offers a full range of utilities via the free IMail Admin Utilities Pack, available for download at the developer's website. A dozen utilities provide administrators with a whole bag of tricks. For instance, the IMAP Copier copies mailbox messages from one server to another while the Mailbox Reporter creates data mailbox data reports in the form of .csv files. The Forward Finder tool allows admins to identify, update and remove any IMail accounts with configured forwarding addresses and the Last Login Report tells admins the last time a user logged into the IMAP, POP3 or Web Mail servers.

    Spam Prevention Tricks

    • Ipswitch offers customers plenty of advice and tricks for preventing the receipt and spreading of email spam. Avoid putting company email addresses on any white lists. Make sure all IMail users have strong passwords and never use obvious passwords such as “password” or a password that matches the username. Admins can enforce strong IMail passwords by setting the password strength under “User Login Attempts.” This feature forces users with weak passwords to change them to something stronger. You can enable IMail's anti-spam Harvest Prevention feature by entering “Relay Options” and setting the software to “No Mail Relay.”

    Themes

    • Each user can change her own IMail theme under “Settings,” a purely aesthetic trick that adds a touch of personalization to the product. At the time of publication, the latest version of IMail, IMail 11.5, featured seven themes in addition to the default look. Some themes add a touch of color to the interface -- such as bright green, pale blue or burnt orange -- while others offer a minimalist, gray scale color scheme.

    Other Features

    • Some of IMail's built-in features help users perform little tricks. For instance, the software's sync feature imports contacts from Microsoft Outlook. When on vacation or otherwise away from the computer for extended periods, users can take advantage of the Vacation Message and Auto Responder features to create short, custom emails to be sent as automated replies. Web Messaging Lite allows users to quickly check their email on slow connections by switching to a low-bandwidth Web client.
