Clock Problems in a Compaq EVO N610c
Your Compaq Evo N610c keeps the time and date current, even when your laptop is turned off, thanks to a small cell battery inside the machine called the CMOS battery. This battery, sometimes referred to as the real-time clock (RTC) battery, also stores the various hardware settings for your laptop and assists with booting procedures. When this battery runs low on charge, your laptop's time and date settings will need reset every time you boot up.
-
CMOS Battery Location
-
The CMOS battery on your Evo N610c is installed under the compartment cover of the memory expansion slot on the bottom of your machine. Flip your laptop upside down and turn the front of the machine toward you. You'll need a small Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the PCI compartment cover, located closest to you on the underside of the laptop, in place. Remove the cover to expose the RTC battery.
Replace Battery
-
The RTC battery for your Evo N610c is a CR1220 coin-cell battery, and replacements are sold at most retail stores. Simply remove the current battery by sliding a flat-bladed screwdriver under it to pop the battery out of its slot. Insert the new battery with the positive side—the side with the writing on it—facing up. Push it firmly until it clicks into place. Replace the PCI compartment cover and screws to finish.
-
Power On
-
Power your Evo on as normal. The laptop should prompt you to reset the time and date settings once it boots. The new CMOS battery will ensure the laptop keeps the proper time and date and allow proper booting. If you receive an error regarding the CMOS battery, power down and reseat the battery properly.
Precautions
-
When working with any interior laptop components, always be aware of static electricity. Even a small static shock can damage the delicate electronics inside your laptop, so ground yourself often while working by touching a separate metal item. Never force any components into or out of their locations, as to do so may cause damage.
